Even in the midst of a war.

Today in a small office in downtown Budapest, 10+ people gathered to cook and prepare meals for more than 100 refugees. This team has set up a registration system where the meals can either be picked up or delivered.

We spent most of the day in a constant state of haste. As there was a line of people waiting at nearly every moment.

Halfway through the day, 2 Ukrainian girls and a boy came to pick up their meals. They were in search of a pair of small shoes for who I assume was their little brother, to replace the ones worn out on their journey to flee Ukraine. We were unable to find a pair to supply as the closest size that had been donated was twice the size they needed.

As they were walking out the door, they thanked me for the help and I said that we pray this is over soon. She then stated, with tears welling up in her eyes, “I miss my home, I want to go back”.
This broke my heart. I know that most likely, the home they left behind has become rubble.
As I am writing this down, my eyes are tearing up again. Because I know this tragic situation will have an everlasting effect on her and her family’s lives for years to come.

We can only continue to help wherever possible. Our small sacrifices each day shine bright in the eyes and hearts of those who have been touched. Within this tragedy, the church has stood up and taken the burden on our shoulders. We are the heart of Christ. We need to step up in whatever means we have to show those who are struggling, that even in the midst of a war, God’s heart breaks for all his people.

Our daily prayer should be “God, break my heart for what breaks yours”.
