The power and importance of God’s word

This last month has been really average. For me, it has been a lot like most of your lives probably are. I wake up, drink coffee and read the Word, go to work, go home, go shop for groceries, go to church, etc. But in these ordinary days, God has been reminding me of something really quite basic.

I have been reading through 1 & 2 Timothy, and Titus. There is this constant theme of how important it is to be in God’s Word, living it out and listening to Him. Most of you are probably like, duh. I know this isn’t a life changing revelation – or a revelation at all. It’s just something I sometimes lose sight of…ALL THE TIME.

The Power & Importance of God’s Word

“All scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness, that the man of God may be complete, equipped for every good work.”

  • 2 Timothy 3:16-17

Everything in scripture is there to teach us, refine us, correct us, train us, and for us to use to be equipped for every good work. We can use it as a defense in spiritual battle, to encourage our souls, to encourage others. God uses it to speak to us and to show us how we are to live in a holy manner.

The pursuit of godliness is also emphasized.

“Train yourself for godliness, for while bodily training is of some value, godliness is of value in every way, as it holds promise for the present life and also for the life to come.”

  • 1 Timothy 4:7-8

Godliness is to chase after the character of God

It is being a servant, humble, affectionate, and obedient. Paul compares what our pursuit of godliness should look like to how we train our bodies. For most of us today, that doesn’t really mean much, but back in ancient cultures, they were all about exercise. It was something everyone pursued, something that everyone wanted, and something everyone worked really hard for.

Think about that.

Is godliness something we pursue with all we have? Is it even something we want anymore? Would you give your most prized possession up if it was holding you back from godliness?

“God prepares His instruments through which He works, and the most important preparation is through the Word of God.”

Our Response

Let’s keep reading God’s Word, listening to His commands, pursuing godliness, and living out what the Bible says. Let’s train to be ready for every good work that God has prepared for us.

My Prayer

God,

Thank You for Your Word. Thank you that we can go to You freely. Thank You that in Your Word we can see Your goodness, and Your mercy, and Your love for us from cover to cover. Give us a hunger for Your Word. Please use it to speak to us, correct us, teach us, and to know you better. Change our hearts to make us doers of the Word, and not only hearers. Deepen our relationships with you, God.

In Jesus’ name we pray,

Amen
